I'm A Xenophobic Redneck.......Gone Wild, Are You?

Hell, and I didn't even know it, thanks to Linda Chavez, and you know what, I really like(d) her, she has great columns and books as well. Oppose the current amnesty/immigration bill and that's who you are, I'm really disappointed with what she has just written here. Here are excerpts:

  • Some people just don't like Mexicans -- or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.

  • What is said today of the Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans and others was once said of Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and others. The only difference is that in the past, the xenophobes could speak freely, unconstrained by a veneer of political correctness. Today, they speak more cautiously, so they talk about the rule of law, national security, amnesty, whatever else they think might make their arguments less racially charged.

  • Where once the xenophobes could advocate forced sterilization and eugenics coupled with virtually shutting off legal immigration from "undesirable" countries, now they must be content with building walls, putting troops on the border, rounding up illegal aliens on the job and deporting them, passing local ordinances to signal their distaste for immigrants' multi-family living arrangements, and doing whatever else they can to drive these people back where they came from...

  • [W]e need to quit pretending that the "No Amnesty" crowd is anything other than what it is: a tiny group of angry, frightened and prejudiced loudmouths backed by political opportunists who exploit them.

It would be one thing if Chavez were saying that some critics of the Senate bill hold racist views. But she is clearly going way beyond that. (" Stripped bare, this is what the current debate on immigration reform is all about.") She slams the Center for Immigration Studies by name and a majority of the people who have supported her work in the past by implication. Her thesis is that people who object to amnesty just don't like Mexicans, and any arguments they make about national security or the rule of law are just coming up with more politic ways to express their racism.

The terrorists must be lickin' their chops, I know many have come in with visas, etc., but if the now lame duck President Bush said he would do all he can to protect the border, this bill falls far, far short, he is going back on his word, why make it
EASIER for terrorists to enter the USA? All we have to do is enforce the laws!

BTW, I am married to a Méxican and I embrace immigration. Our current INS department is seriously flawed, let's not take a step backward, we must improve our current system and enforce the law.........which by the way, will save billions and billions of dollars.

am-nes-ty - Gr amnestia, a forgetting ]] a pardon, esp. for political offenses
