* 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years' War between Britain and Spain.
* 1897, the slogan "All The News That's Fit To Print" first appeared on Page One of The New York Times. The exact date when their policy turned to "Only the News that Fits Our Perspective We Print" remains unknown
* 1942, the former French liner Normandie capsized in New York Harbor a day after it caught fire while being refitted for the U.S.
Navy. ALSO: RCA Victor presented Glenn Miller and his Orchestra with a "gold record" for their recording of "Chattanooga Choo Choo,"
which had sold more than 1 million copies
* 1962, Francis Gary Powers, an American who was shot down over the Soviet Union while flying a CIA spy plane in 1960, is released by the Soviets in exchange for the U.S. release of a Russian spy. The exchange concluded one of the most dramatic episodes of the Cold War.
* 1967, the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, dealing with presidential disability and succession, went into effect
* 1996, IBM's chess-playing computer, Deep Blue, won the first game of a six-game match against Gary Kasparov, the world's champion chess grandmaster
