* 1942, Nazi officials, ym"sh, held the notorious Wannsee conference, during which they arrived at their "final solution" that called for exterminating Jews

* 1945, President Roosevelt was sworn into office for an unprecedented fourth term

* 1981, Iran released 52 Americans it had held hostage for 444 days, minutes after the presidency had passed from Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan

* 1995, the space shuttle Endeavour landed after a nine-day mission that included snaring a Japanese satellite

* 2000, hundreds of thousands of protesting Filipinos forced President Joseph Estrada to step down; Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was sworn in as the new president

The "Carter Legacy" lives on right into the Iran situation of the 21st Century.
